I have recently got a full grown red nose pitbull he is about a year and a half old and for the first week or so everything was fine then one morning I went and let him out of his crate and he was all welted up it looked like I had tied him down in an ant bed. He is really not bad about scratching he does rub on the furniture but doesn't really scratch... Most days the welts aren't to bad and tend to fade through out the day, and some days he is just covered in them. I have watched what he eats, when he has bathes, and where he goes out side and nothing ever seems to be the same. Is their a poosibillity that my dog can be allergic to my four cats??? The dogs crate is in the cats room... Could it be a depression thing??? The welts are somtimes worst when he sleeps in the crate verses not in the crate, and if I am gone longer than usual during the day they tend to be worse??? I have heard that pitbulls have sensitive skin is this something that he and I are going to just have to live with or is their a solution????
Please help

  1. I have a rescued rednosed pit ( he sure looks like one) he has several allergies food and enviromental, grasses, trees and food among them.  Hypoallergenic food , some natural foods and unfortuneatly low dose of prednisone have him under controll, he was actually abandoned because of his allergies. He was near deaths door when he was rescued. He is a sweetie , hoping to change peoples view of his breed.

  2. I am not a vet, but I am a dog groomer.  I also have a red nose that welts.  Mine is allergic to grass!  Dogs are like people, they can get a verity of rashes or allergies.   I would watch what you are feeding your dog, Corn, beef and wheat typically are, in my experience, the most common allergies in food.  I feed my dog Nutro-Max Lamb and Rice.  My dogs skin allergies have subsided a lot.   Your dog my be allergic to the laundry detergent or fabric softener you use. (If you have blankets or bedding in the crate.) Try changing to a non scented or "free" detergent and don't use softener. If there is no bedding it is possible that your dog has fleas. Even ONE flea can set off an allergic reaction causing your dog to welt up.  You may want to spray your crate with anti flea treatment like Adams flea and tick killer safe for dogs and cats.  If all else fails talk to your vet about treatments.
