Redcar’s conditions ideal for Firebeam in Totepool Guisborough Stakes
Firebeam, who has run many good races in defeat early in the year, is all set to give a good account in Totepool Guisborough Stakes, a Listed race, taking place at Redcar this weekend.
The 4-year-old has plenty going for him, including soft ground. With favourable conditions, the William Haggas-trained looks in ideal state to add the winning touch and register first win of the season today.
Owned by Highclere Thoroughbred Racing-Blue Peter, the bay gelding made his seasonal debut on a high. The audience at Haydock saw him missing the gold medal only by a neck’s distance in the Network Group Spring Trophy Stakes (Listed Race).
The 7-4 favourite kept himself in the front row during most part of the race, but failed to quicken towards the finish. After facing a narrow defeat, he continued to run well without any success.
The son of Cadeaux Genereux secured the runner-up spot in a very tough competition at Newbury in mid July. Bred by Dukes Stud & Overbury Stallions Ltd, the skilful runner was fourth on his previous two starts respectively at Curragh and Goodwood.
Despite the ongoing unlucky spell, nothing can be taken away from him. He will be suited by the return to seven furlongs, and should not disappoint his supporters today.
The class 1 meeting has attracted 10 entries. The plan is to kick off the proceedings at 15:10 GMT. A decent prize of £18,714 is reserved for the successful runner.
Firebeam’s chances are quite bright, but it is not going to be a straightforward trip for him. A gutsy sort who can give him most to do is Fulbright.
The 3-year-old enjoyed the best form of his career in July-August, when he clinched three consecutive triumphs. The Mark Johnston-trained suffered a shameful loss in late August, but quickly brought things under control.
After clinching the runner-up place at Haydock, the son of Exceed And Excel carried forward the good work to ensure a close win over Tazahum at Sandown last month.
Despite being penalised, Fulbright looks to be a smart sort, who is sure to go close. So, Firebeam needs to make the best of the favourable conditions to stay ahead. Good luck to all the horses.
