Reddit is not verified news, is it?

I have a friend who gets all her "news" from Reddit. I understand that Reddit is social news, whatever that is... But all of the stories on this site are not necessarily verified or written by journalists, are they? Can this site be considered a legitimate news source? She has come up with some whacky things that she read on there. Thanks.

  1. Reddit links to items on other sites and provides a space for users to comment upon those items and vote upon what they like/dislike. The more votes something gets, the more likely more people see it on Reddit.

I just took a look at the home page of Reddit and saw that some of the linked items are written by journalists from reputable sources (e.g, BBC) and some are from legitimate, albeit biased blogs. But many of the items are not from news sites at all let alone written by journalists or verified to be true: a picture on Flickr, a real estate listing, etc.
