Reds pitching coach in no rush to make final decision on rotation – MLB News
Experimentation to prove a point is understandable. But risks intrinsically involved in certain times cannot be ruled out either.
The Cincinnati Reds may well be bracing themselves for something unique – if not previously unheard of: Using sixth starter in the upcoming season. However, the issue has invited debate with varying views. Naturally, it does not have a lot of buyers. Bryan
Price, Reds pitching coach, is not in favour of it either.
It all came to fore after the reports that Chapman may be used in the rotation after his successful season as closer in 2012. That said, the proposal has detractors as well.
Bronson Arroyo, one of the club’s starters, is not in favour of going for this decision. He had his arguments to make. Neither is Bryan Price – like said earlier.
Price offers his insight into this matter in a succinct and subtle way based on the experience.
"For whatever reason, when you condition yourself to a five-man rotation, your body seems to respond that way," Price said. "Day 4, you may still have some tenderness from your previous start or bullpen session, but on Day 5 your arm and body are ready to
go.”
“You don't want to get into a situation where you ask the other four guys to compromise their routine out of respect for one guy. We're not going to do that. Even if it's an idea built with good intent, it would be a disaster."
The Reds are read for any criticism on the decisions they will have to make in the days to come. They are not inclined to go for a hasty decision at the moment. It is this reason that debate has almost become public.
The entire conclusion will be based on coordination after the plans are made. Thus, it will be interesting to see how the Reds go about it as the Spring Training is on the horizon.
Using Chapman as the starter or in bullpen will be a decision to be made seeing the performance of the pitcher in the Spring Training. Chapman, on the other hand, is all ready for it.
