Reds reportedly agree to re-sign Ryan Ludwick – MLB News
After weeks of uncertainty and speculations, it is clear what is the way ahead.
The Cincinnati Reds and outfielder Ryan Ludwick are said to have agreed to a two-year, $15 million deal, multiple reports and sources suggest. The deal is only pending physical now.
Reports had been making rounds regarding the nature of the deal. After struggling in 2011 while playing with the San Diego Padres, Ryan Ludwick was signed by the Reds, a deal worth $2.5 million for a year.
It was a rebound season for the outfielder wherein he batted .275. It came at the right time as well. The Reds All-Star right baseman Joey Votto was out of the lineup due to knee surgery. In his absence, among others, Ludwick played a key role to sustain
the team’s success as they went on to remain atop the National League Central.
With 26 home runs and 80 RBIs, his consistency helped the Reds’ offence be among the best in the National League. But as the one-year deal ended, he declined a $5 million mutual option and became the free agent.
Soon after declining the mutual option, there were talks as to where the outfielder was headed. Interestingly, no nig news surfaced with regards to Ludwick considering moving to any other team or getting a good contract offer.
Playing among the likes of Brandon Phillips, Joey Votto and Todd Frazier, Ludwick seems to have had a right combination here as far as the teammates are concerned. That might have also played a role in agreeing to offer made to him.
Now that Ludwick is back, the Reds will have enough space to manoeuvre and make adjustments accordingly. Manager Dusty Baker can put Brandon Phillips in the second base, while making other necessary moves as well.
Also, the Reds will be looking for a leadoff hitter as well. The Winter Meetings, which concluded last week did not witness any major transactions on the Reds’ behalf. But the offseason provides an opportunity to look for the right player to bring in.
Before the Spring Training, re-signing Ryan Ludwick – it goes without saying, is a good move.
