Reds roll over Rebels 53-3 – Super Rugby match report
Melbourne Rebels’ injury has been salted by Queensland Reds today, after they broke their shackles with a record thrashing of 53-3 to Rebels, who stood there and saw nothing but regret.
Nothing seemed to be working for Rebels at Suncorp Stadium, as their fifth minute lead was taken away and never given back. Reds kept on scoring throughout the match and kept the Rebels’ defense on their toes. Rebels were gifted with an injury crisis fledging
permit battling to recover somehow.
Reds have been low on tries throughout this year’s Super Rugby tournament so far and had only three tries in their pocket when they arrived today on the field. Last year’s Super Rugby entertainers found their lost charm and kept on pushing the opposition
with tries, piling up a total of seven try bombardment.
Rebels seemed to be completed focused out, as they missed their own line outs gifting Reds with unnecessary possession. Reds subjugated at the breakdown and owned almost all the scrums. Red’s had their best win in the previous sixteen Super Rugby seasons
and specially after getting some serious thrashing of 43-0 by Waratahs in their Super 15 opening cash, this was a major boost and a new mood to their game play.
Rebels became the victim of the humid environment, which caused the ball control very difficult and they were punished by Reds on every blunder they made. At halftime, Reds had already slotted 25 points on the scoreboard in front of a huge crowd of 22,031.
Reds missed three tries in the first half, which meant if they would have been successful, the situation would have been a nightmare for the already sleep walking Rebels side.
The most embarrassing moment was not when the final whistle was blown, but the first half blunder made prop Greg Somerville, who dropped a simple ball just before the touch line, losing a five pointer.
Quade Cooper was named as man of the match; he had set the first try which was scored by Anthony Faingaa. His passing and ball control was praised by everyone. Second try was scored by Adam Wallaca Harrison, who made his comeback to Super Rugby after three
years. The former Brumbies lock dived over goal line to score the try and stood out throughout the match as the most impressive lock in Super Rugby so far.
Mike Harris scored two tries for Reds after he was called off the bench in second half and was also responsible for the conversion of final try by Luke Morahan.
Rebels made a total of 53 missed tackles, which has been so far the worst from them. Stirling Mortlock, the Rebels captain admitted, “Unfortunately we weren't up to the level. Missed tackles and turnovers, we just couldn't mount any pressure on these guys.”
Reds are standing at second position on the table with a total of 16 points after winning three out of five Super 15 fixtures. On the other hand, Rebels are standing at the second last position with 6 points after losing four matches out of five. Sharks
are currently leading the campaign with 19 points under the belt and only one loss out of five Super Rugby clashes. Highlanders, Reds and Sharks are in the conference leaders’ trio till now.
