Reds takes down Melbourne Rebels in Super Rugby 15 - Rugby News Update
Queensland Reds achieved another milestone on the way to Super Rugby play-offs this season by claiming a 32-17 victory over Melbourne Rebels at Melbourne on June 29, 2012.
Despite the fact that Rebels are Australia's fifth provincial team, they were unable to put together a striking show.
The Reds took a 24-3 lead by the half time, which made it hard for the hosts to fill the gap in the second half. The Rebels tried to catch up but they were unable to challenge the strong defence of their opponents.
Reds' Fly-half Michael Harris, apart from Rebels' poor performance, turned out to be a key figure in his side's success, by pounding the Rebels' defence.
At the same time, Dom Shipperley and Wallace-Harrison’s efforts, scoring one try each, should not be ignored.
Melbourne Rebels on the other hand, managed to score one penalty goal within the first quarter of an hour. Thereafter, their score remained static for more than 40 minutes until Beale scored a try followed by Huxley’s conversion.
Rebels did not score any points afterwards. Meanwhile, Reds scored their final try and took the score to 32
-17.
Following the win for his team, Ewen McKenzie, the Reds' coach, paid gratitude towards his team and appreciated their performance and strong defence, especially in the second half, when Rebels were trying their level best to make a comeback.
"There was just a patch there where we gave them some counter attack and Beale at 10 made a big difference to them. He made things happen for them as he does," he said.
While making the announcements about the match and admiring his squad’s attacking tactics, he did not hesitate to praise the good defence that they put up against the opponents.
"There was a period of the game when we were just holding on but we actually defended pretty well. There was some pretty good and courageous last ditch defence but ideally we wouldn't have put ourselves in that position," he
said.
