Redskins’ Roy Helu to start as running back against New York Jets – NFL News
Washington Redskins are going to start with running back Roy Helu in the week 13 game of the National Football League current season against New York Jets, coach Mike Shanahan confirmed on Monday.
"He's our starter, for sure," the coach said about Helu.
The 22-year-old running back is playing his first NFL season after being picked up by Redskins in the 2011 NFL Draft. He has appeared in all the 11 games this season, but started only two of them.
He has managed one touchdown and 74 carries of 356 yards with an average of 4.8 yards per carry. During the last week victory against Seattle Seahawks 23-17, he had 23 carries and rushed for 108 yards. His first NFL touchdown also
came in that game.
“I thought he was ready to play a full game,” Shanahan said after the recent win. “It was a chance to put the load on him. He had played enough and felt comfortable enough to see what he could do.”
Helu himself was delighted to have played an important role in the victory of his team, which is not doing very well this season. He appreciated the performance of other players and vowed to impress the viewers with his performance
in the next games.
“It was an honour to go in there and get the start,” he said. “Our offensive line, our tight ends, they all did great [blocking], and so did our receivers [blocking] down the field. Hopefully I did my best.”
Meanwhile, Redskins’ offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan has pointed out some mistakes in Helu’s game saying that the player is inconsistent in pass protection. However, he maintained that Helu works hard and does his best to improve
his game.
Redskins are placed at the bottom of the National Football Conference East division. They have given tough competition to their opponents in a number of games, but have failed to dominate them and get victory. Above them in the
division are placed Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants and Philadelphia Eagles at first, second and third spot respectively. Redskins do not have any chances to make it to the playoffs.
They are going to face New York Jets on Sunday.
