Question:

Reduce power on amp?

This is probably a stupid question but I was thinking of buying a PDX-1.1000 just because I know in my next vehicle I will be needing a 1000 watt jl audio 13w7 sub, but currently I only have 2 jl audio 10w1v2 subs in my truck that run at about 150rms each. I need to buy an amp right now, so I was wondering if I can reduce the gain all the way, or add something to reduce the wattage of the PDX-1.1000 until I need it. Will doing this dammage the amp, and is this possible?

  1. yeah its possible and not a bad idea at all, just back way off the gain like you said and you could even wire the current subs in series to get more ohms therefore lowering the power the amp puts out. i have a pdx 1000 and an alpine type x 12 its a mean setup, you wont damage the amp doing this

  2. ohms matter with any amp, and that amp is not stable at 1ohm so you could overheat it with the wrong wiring (impedance)

    the gain is not "power"

Setting the "gain" or input sensitivity control is an important adjustment common to all amplifier installations. Proper gain setting helps reduce noise and distortion and allows for the widest possible dynamic range.

it is to maximize clean signal strength from your amp, so when you turn up the volume at the radio the the highest setting you listen to it at the amp wont send out a distorted signal to the subs
