Question:

Reduce scars on cleft lip/palate repair...?

My daughter just had her lip repair done. The plastic surgeon did a great job. I was wondering if anyone knew of a product that could help reduce the scarring if I start using it right away. Any other parents of cleft lip/palate children who have any advise? Any healthcare workers?

  1. I have son that was born with cleft palate and lip on both sides. I didn't use anything after they fixed his surgery. he six year old now and you can't hard tell he had surgery at all when he was a baby. When they grow it would start disappearing.

  2. My daughter had her cleft repaired 2  1/2 years ago..We didn't use anything..I know a lot of parents swear by Creme'de la mar  (kinda pricey..from what I understand some get a sample off of ebay)..Others just massage the scar..The scars do change over time..We just make sure to put sunscreen on hers..They do heal up amazingly!

  3. There are topical over the counter treatments to reduce the appearance of scars.  I think one of them is called Mederna or somehting like that.  However, because it is close to your sons mouth you might be better off trying something that will not hurt him if he swallows some of it.  Along that line I would suggest Vitamin E.  There are many that say that Vitamin E helps to reduce the appearance of scars.
