Referee Omelio Castillo awarded Shield of Appreciation - Volleyball
A special tribute was recently given to Omelio Castillo, who is a Cuban volleyball referee. The tribute was made to the honoured Castillo by the North, Central American and Caribbean Volleyball Confederation (NORCECA) along with the Pan American Volleyball
Union as well.
The tribute ceremony was made after the XVI Pan American Games men’s volleyball competition reached its close. With the championships being held in Guadalajara, Mexico, the tribute was also made in there. The ceremony was presided over by Cristobal Marte
Hoffiz, who is the UPV President as well as the president of the Norceca.
Hoffiz made the following comments at the award ceremony: “In this special moment we want to give credit to a person that has sacrificed a lot in his life as a professional and as a great volleyball referee who has traveled around the world representing
the American continent. Here at the Pan Am games a special, Omelio Castillo closes a important cycle, his retirement is a successful retirement after a brilliant career at the highest level.”
After a respectable introduction and a list of well deserved compliments, the Cuban coach was bestowed with a shield that appreciated his efforts in both NORCECA and Pan Am games. Not only did Castillo receive the special shield that was given in his honour
but the Cuban was also congratulated heartily by the members of the Control Committee that were present at the ceremony.  
The award ceremony took place after the Pan AM Games reached their close in Mexico. Initially, the city of Guadalajara played host to the women’s competition that were held from the 14th to the 21st of October. The team that was able
to earn the first slot in the women’s championship was that of Brazil. On the other hand, the men’s Pan Am Games started off on the 24th October and reached its close on the 30th. The team that was able to earn the gold medal in the men’s
department was also Brazil.
The native country of the tribute receiving coach, Cuba, was able to secure itself the second position in the men’s tournament.
