Question:

Refilling US Prescriptions in Ireland?

So I have looked for pharmacies/chemists that have locations in both the US and Ireland thinking that would be the easiest route to go with this. Well, I cannot find any.

I have a nasty back injury which is now going on two years of suffering. Im on daily meds for it including Oxycodone, Soma (muscle relaxers), and Celebrex. This is in addition to my normal over the counter add-ons like ibuprofen to bring the pain down to a level which I can function on.

I have just found out that I must make an emergency trip to Ireland in three to seven days and will be there for two weeks to take care of it. My prescription is up on the 27th, but I am eligible for a refill around the 23rd. My insurance company is not friendly about the early refill because of a trip. The only other thing that I can think of is to have my family refill my prescription in the States and get it to me in Dublin asap.

Do you have any other ideas? Will Ireland honor US fill requests? Thanks!

  1. bring a doctors letter with your detailing the medications and what they are for ... if the local pharmacy cannot fill your prescription, go to a local doctor who should be able to write a prescription for you ... it might cost you quite a bit of money though as it's unlikely they'll dispense the medication for free ... if you keep the receipts hopefully your insurance company will reimburse you

  2. I doubt any pharmacy will fill a prescription written in another country - I lived abroad for a year, brought all my prescriptions with me, couldn't get them filled.  You'll probably have to go to a gp (general practitioner) here to get a prescription written.  That should cost about €50, could be a bit more someplaces.  You'll probably have to pay for the cost of the medicines too.  Check out how much it would cost you to courier your medicines over from the US, I wouldn't send them any other way - even registered post isn't great.

  3. Get your stuff before you come here because the Irish doctors and pharmacists will fleece ya!

  4. best thing to do is get a note from your doc along with his email adress and then go to a doc over here, then you could get a new prescription over her that the pharmacy's will honour! (thats presuming your american one wont work over here)

    good luck!
