Refinishing a crib?

i was givin a crib that has cherry finish. i want to paint it white, the changing table is not made out of real wood, i thikn it is that mdf stuff, but it has cherry finish as well. can you paint over that? would you just sand it down first?

  1. You'll want to sand the surface down first. The glossy finish/sealant will prevent the paint from sticking properly. The paint needs something to bond with on the surface. If it is slick, it will chip and crack.


  2. Lots of good spray can paints out there.

    If the finish is intact & tight, a light sanding or steel wool to scuff the surface is fine for the crib & table.

    Would prime & use several thin coats for all the crib rails & bars.

    Since a little one will be chewing on the crib,check

    the primer & paint cans or mfrs' website to see if the finish is  washable &"child safe".... most are  these days .

  3. sand it with a 30-60 grit sand paper to remove all of the finish and just paint it, u probably could just paint over it without sanding it but for best results sand it.

  4. There is a show on TV called " MTV Cribs " that might be helpful.
