Refinishing an older dresser and headboard?

Question

My mother-in-law gave us a bedroom set from the 80's to use in our spare bedroom. I want to try and paint the set and get new hardware for it. I was wondering what type of paint to use. I think there is a wood veneer over the top. There are also what look like water spots and damage on the surfaces of the pieces. This will be my first attempt at something like this, so any advice will be appreciated. Thanks!

Just go ahead and paint it.  If the surface is too glossy, dull it with sandpaper prior to painting
