I have a dresser that is currenlty painted but I want to paint it white now. I know that I have to strip the current paint and all that, but I am basically trying to find out what the easiest/quickest method will be for me to do this project. Also, what steps I should take after I paint it white to make the finish durable.

  1. The easiest way is to you use a stripper such as turpentine or a paint thinner.  Or the other way is to sand it.  Use a fine sand paper especially if the wood is pressed board.  When finishing it you can use a semi gloss, gloss or a flat finisher to protect the paint

  2. The last two answers were correct, but if you decide to go on top of what you have, make sure you use a shellac-based primer. That will seal off anything that might bleed through and cause fish-eye. Then after your white coat is done you can use a spar varnish or polyurethane for more durability, but both of these will yellow in time. The only other advise I would give to you is to find a professional, but this is definately something you can do. Remember to read all instructions.

  3. If you want to strip it, use a product that contains methylene chloride and is a semi paste.  This will eat away the paint.  You will have to do this outside, wear gloves, good ventilaton, and then sand, prime, and paint.   Or if the dresser looks okay now and just needs a new color. you could  just sand, prime, and then paint .  good luck.

  4. The best thing to do would be to buy a cover primer and paint it white...why strip the paint to paint it again?
