  2. The word RADAR is an acronym for 'radio direction and range.'

    It works by transmitting pulses of r.f. enegy in the microwave range.  The design of the antenna (the 'dish') is such that the energy is transmitted in a narrow beam.

    Since the velocity of the r.f. energy is known, if any energy is reflected back to the radar site from an object within the beam the distance to that object can be determined.
