Reflecting on 150 years?

The game has undergone major changes in the last 150 years.

None so than since 1986 when the AFL came into being.

Since then we have seen people scream, rant and rave about the players going soft and the games are too sanitised.

1) Hand in the back rule

2) Head high hits

3) Punching a player (shame on you Barry)

4) Diving on the ball

5) Scragging

I admit there's been confusing about the changes initially but I think it has been good for the game.

Players are stronger than ever...faster and probably even more skillful given that the defence is closing on them alot quicker than they used to.

The game IS commercialised....but that is how you will expand the game and pay players money to train full time so they can make the game even better.

  1. hey macca, when i reflect i generally think that the game its self is still no.1,we've had different eras and different rules/styles of games for 150 yrs and the only thing i miss is a bit of the hard stuff but hey there are still some ripping games each week and the competitiveness is greater than ever.

i still love the footy and go when i can,i only wish the AFL would go back and simplify the rules so the umps can officiate in a more consistent way.

  2. I think some of the rules and regulations go a little bit too far, but all in all it's a great game and nothing will change that!

GO CROWS!!! (Sorry, I couldn't resist!)

  3. 1st step.   Get rid of Demetriou and put Jesaulenko, Sheedy or Barassi in charge.

The rest will take care of itself.

  4. We don't get much Australian Football here in the states but people here said a lot of the same stuff when the officials made the players wear helmets and stop fighting ever two minutes.

When any game gets commercialized usually the players make more money and the team owners suddenly want to protect their investment. But on the other hand the game usually gets better because player know if you don't give the fan something spectacular to watch they will go some place else. I mean Cricket is Australia's other game, right?

  5. finally something on here about AFL!!!

    love it to death.

    yes i agree with you.

    the changes have been good.

i only wish though that the umpires would be more consistent with their decisions, especially on the holding the ball rule and hands in the back. usually the frees they dont give stevie wonder could see and the ones they do give, there is either nothing in them at all, they umps have their timing wrong about the whole situation or it was such a minor offence it had no impact on the game whatsoever. oh well, what can we do?

players are stronger and faster than ever. if you cant keep up with the rest these days, your hopeless and you wont be played.

the game is extremely commercialised. it is one of the most popular sports in the world. the best in my opinion. i think its good that it is being commercialised. obviously we often get the good irish players who come over and play who are very good and maybe even now some more nationalities. i think that with all this the players will want to get their names more exposed than ever, will make them train harder and perform better than ever, therefore i guess their contract payment will go up aswell!

feels good to get my opinion across because some people just dont know anything at all on this!

good on you for posting it.

the hall of fame tribute match was excellent to wasnt it.

    GO THE VICS!

    dream team were excellent also.

feel free to email me with your thoughts on this and who you were going for. i will be interested to hear lol.
