Which lens in a refracting telescope inverts the image -- the objective lens or the eyepiece?

  1. The objective lens inverts the image.  This is easy to verify by removing the eyepiece and slipping a piece of thin paper in the focal plane.  You can also use the eyepiece by itself as a magnifier to show that the eyepiece does not invert the image.


  2. The objective lens forms an image that is inverted.  The eyepiece looks at the inverted image and focuses it on your retina.
