1. When calculating RI of a transparent medium is it:

n= speed of light in air/speed of light in transparent medium

2. Is there much difference when calculating the RI using speed of light in air/vacuum?

3. How can RI be used in science/technology?

  1. 1. Um...n is the refractive index, c would denote speed of light thru a vacuum and v will denote speed/velocity of light in a transparent medium.

    2. No..same equation, don't worry too much. Just grasp the concepts.

    3. RI is relevant to Fiber Optics,as well as other optial technology used to build telescopes, cameras etc. It is also used to figure out why a straw for example seems to be detached from its body in water, in calculating real and apparent depth of bodies of water. It is also used in laser technology..so yes it is important!
