I have finally traced a strange noise to my 11 year old Kitchenaid KTRS21KDAL02 refrigerator. The noise is very brief -not over a second. It is a fairly loud knock like sound with a bit of rattle following, and it happens just as the compressor turns off. It has been going on some time, but I just traced it to the refrigerator. I pulled the metal cover for the back bottom section where the compressor is located. The compressor seems to be well attached with 4 bolts going through rubber mounts to the bottom panel of the refrigerator. I could not find anything that seemed to be knocking together when pressed by hand. This does not happen every time the compressor turns off, and when it does not happen you just hear the normal relay click. There is a fiberglass pad or something of the sort stuffed between the top of the compressor and the top of the metal compartment in which the compressor and other components are in. If this is something serious and the refrigerator is about to fail, I would just replace it. However if it is not likely to be serious I can live with the noise.
