Question:

Refrigerator/freezer not working

I have the refrigerator in my garage. It had not been working for the last 3 days. I pulled covers off and started checking for line voltage. With the wiring diagram I traced it down to what is described as a "T.M.". 4 wires going to it - brown, orange, red, and white. It was mounted on the front of refrigerator at the very bottom on left side by front wheel. I noticed it had a potentiometer mounted on it and I turned it and all started working. Was wondering exactly what this part is. For outside temperature, setting for ?. It has been cold here in WI. 20* And that is when it stopped working, when it got down to 20*.
Also, how would I set this part if it does have something to do with the outside air temp.? Just got the refrigerator this summer. Thank you
