Question:

Refrigerator help! - Freezer has ice forming...?

I have one of those older refrigerators that has the freezer in the top portion that is only separated by a shelf and a plastic door.

The problem is that there is a lot of ice buildup inside of the freezer and its making it hard to open and close the little plastic door to it. I tried to scrape it off but the ice is too hard.

Is this normal? What can I do to solve this problem? What is causing this? Is it due to the refrigerator being old? I don't want to thaw out the fridge and freezer just for it to happen again.

help

thanks!

  1. from your info sounds like a non-frostfree unit . only way to deal with that is to manually defrost routinely. I used  to pack everything into a cooler and pour warm water over the frost and use a hair dryer to do it as fast as possible. leave unit running , recovers temp faster than shutting off

  2. If your refrigerator/freezer is old it may not be self defrosting like newer ones are. You have to manually defrost these. I've never owned one but I remember my mom defrosting her avocado green one back in the 70's. Here is a link that will give you step by step instructions:http://www.ehow.com/how_2064543_defrost-... My mom always used the second method. The first method is new to me.

  3. pull it away from the wall and take an air hose and blow out the dust.

    it cant breathe

  4. If its not a frost free, you will always have this problem, but you can defrost it by unplugging the fridge, remove the food and use a hair dryer to melt the ice and mop it up with a towel.

If it is a self defrosting type, there is several things that can cause it. This site will help you locate the problem -
