Refrigerator over cooling! what do I do?

Question

maytag brand refrigerator( i door is freezer, the other is refrigerator)

So all of a sudden a couple days ago the fridge started to freeze up, seriously everything in there is icy and or frozen.

Its acting like a freezer

the freezer is at 6 and the fridge was at 4 but we lowered it to like 2 but its still really cold and icy

7 is the coldest

what can i do?

Is the fridge broken?

Its new just got it two years ago....why did it act up all of a sudden

any ideas or whatever?

They use a damper door that opens and closes to control the temperature in the refrigerator. It is possible it froze up and has stuck open.  

This is more likely if you live in a humid area or somebody left the door open for a long time (like an hour or two)

You might  try emptying the whole refrigerator, stick the items that you can in a cooler, and let it thaw. Then try it again.

On most models that door is controlled by a thermostat assembly that pushes the door open against a spring that closes it. It can be that device has gone bad.

But most likely it is stuck or frozen.

If you pay close attention to your fridge I think you would find it is not cycling on and off.  If this is the case the, thermostat or other device that Maytag uses is not turning off when it is satisfied.

The thermostat (or other temperature control unit) for the fridge part may be stuck in the open or on position; if so the compressor may be running constantly, making the fridge ice up and using a lot of electricity.

Try defrosting it completely (store the contents elsewhere), set the fridge to 2 and see if it does it again.

If you don't know how to replace a thermostat, call a service technician.
