  1. Though you may have a valid visa, such a visa is never guarantee that you will be allowed into the country. That is up to the immigration officer who inspects you at the time of entry, and yes, they have the power to turn you back even if you have a perfectly valid visa.

If you have a good life in Canada, then when you travel to the US on a B1/B2 visa, it is your responsibility to bring proof of that good life in Canada and of your ties to that country which would compel you to leave the US. Proof of employment or study (such as a letter from your school/employer saying you have an active job or curriculum, you're going on vacation and are expected back), an active lease or deed for housing in Canada, proof of close family there, all those can be used as evidence that you do not intend to remain in the US.

  2. Some border guards do go on power trips, especially the younger ones.

Unfortunately they can deny you entry unless you are a citizen.  I have dual Canadian and American citizenship, and even I have trouble getting into the US sometimes.

  3. Actually they can deny you entrance to the US.  Your best bet is to bring some form of proof that you work or live in Canada and that you have something that you plan on returning to in a week or twos time.  Sometimes the border patrol can be ridiculous.

Quick story:  my boyfriend and I decided to stop into Canada one night after dinner just to hang out at the bars.  It was a last minute decision, but I luckily had my passport on me.  The Canadian border police stopped and questioned us for about 10 minutes and I had to recant my life story to this man.  How we met, where we went to college, what we were celebrating... blah blah blah.  I'm not sure what he was doing, but at any time he could have said.. nope you must turn around and head back into Detroit. Sucks.  But it's the reality of the situation.  Thankfully he let us pass.

  4. The legal reality is that even with a valid visa you can still be denied from entry if the CBP officer thinks you may violate the rules of your visa or pose a flight risk (leaving the confines of you visa and staying in the US).

You could get in touch with a lawyer to try and find out why you were denied entry, but even then a lawyer couldn't guarantee that you'd be admitted with legal intervention.

  5. yes, they can.
