Regan Leong and Jordan Harrison win freestyle events – Australian State Teams Age SC Championships
Chris Licciardi and Jordan Harrison of Queensland (QLD) won gold medals of 200m and 1500m freestyle in the Boys 16-17 years old category, on the final day of 2011 Australian State Teams Age Short Course Championships. The meet ended on September 19, at the
Australian Institute of Sport (AIS), Canberra.
The 16-year-old Leong dominated the final of 200m freestyle on the concluding day of the championships. He submitted a time of 1 minute and 48.23 seconds for the gold medal. With his phenomenal effort, the champion remained only 0.24 seconds slower than
the age group record holder, QLD’s Justin James, who posted a time of 1 minute and 47.99 seconds in 2010.
Nevertheless, silver medal of the race was secured by Leong’s team-member, Cameron McEvoy, who remained just a touch away from the gold medallist and appeared on the wall with a timing of 1 minute and 48.24 seconds. McEvoy maintained a lead of 2.76 seconds
over Ben Schreiner of Victoria, who reported a time of 1 minute and 51.00 seconds for bronze medal.
Subsequently, the fourth finest spot of the swim was secured by Jarrod Poort of New South Wales (NSW), who stayed just 0.75 seconds slower than his former finisher and concluded his swim in a time of 1 minute and 51.75 seconds. He was trailed by his team-mate,
Hugo Morris, who was nearly one second behind and clocked a time of 1 minute and 52.66 seconds for fifth position.
In the meantime, Harrison presented a notable effort of 15 minutes and 18.36 seconds in the final of 1500m freestyle. With his commendable effort, Harrison won gold medal of the event and was followed by NSW’s Jarrod Poort, who remained 1.03 seconds slower
than him and reached the podium for silver medal by clocking a time of 15 minutes and 19.39 seconds. Poort was chased by Ben Schreiner of VIC, who remained nearly 43 seconds behind and touched the wall in a time of 16 minutes and 02.15 seconds.
Meanwhile, the fourth finishing spot of the distant freestyle discipline was acquired by Adrian Waydock of South Australia (SA), who completed his 60-lap swim by reporting a time of 16 minutes and 02.16 seconds. He was trailed by Lynd Goldsmith of Western
Australia (WA), who remained 7.15 seconds behind his foregoing competitor and ended his swim in a time of 16 minutes and 09.31 seconds.
Furthermore, the arena enjoyed the praiseworthy efforts of all participants in freestyle events, while the winners were invited on the victory stand for their superb efforts after the completion of the final session.
