Regan Leong grabs Boys 200m freestyle gold title – Australian State Teams Age SC Championships
Regan Leong of Queensland grabbed gold medal of Boys 200m freestyle in the 16-17 years old category, on day three of the 2011 Australian State Teams Age Short Course Championships. The session concluded on Monday, September 19, at the Australian Institute
of Sport (AIS) in Canberra.
The 16-year-old Leong completed his swim in a top ranked time of 1 minute and 48.23 seconds for gold medal. The gold medallist was just 0.24 seconds slower from improving the age group record of 1 minute and 47.99 seconds, made by Justin James of Queensland
during 2010.
The champion was followed by his team-member, Cameron McEvoy, who remained just 0.01 seconds behind him and appeared on the podium for silver medal with a timing of 1 minute and 48.24 seconds. McEvoy was chased by Ben Schreiner of Victoria, who remained
2.76 seconds slower than him and reached the podium for bronze medal by submitting a time of 1 minute and 51.00 seconds.
The fourth spot of the race was claimed by Jarrod Poort of New South Wales, who remained only 0.75 seconds behind Schreiner and reported a time of 1 minute and 51.75 seconds. He was followed by Poort’s team-mate, Hugo Morris, who remained nearly one seconds
slower than him and emerged as the fifth position holder of the event by clocking a time of 1 minute and 52.66 seconds.
In the meantime, Morris’s team-member, Nichole Rispoli captured the sixth fastest spot of the event, by completing his swim in a time of 1 minute and 52.87 seconds. He was in a lead of 1.17 seconds over his subsequent competitor, Jack Gerrard of Victoria,
who ended his sprint in a time of 1 minute and 54.07 seconds. Lynd Goldsmith of Western Australia was the last swimmer of the race, as he ended his swim in 1 minute and 55.69 seconds.
The session came to an end after the completion of all scheduled events, while the winners were called upon the victory stand for their convincing swims after the session.
