Question:

Regarding proof of income in Texan rental law.

I have a friend who is going to move to Houston, Texas. He found an apartment to rent. However, the landlord request him to show proof of income that is at least thrice that of the rent. I would like to know if such law, or any Texan law similar to this is available/true?

Thanks!

  1. Law?  No.

But if you want to rent that guy's place, then you need to show that you make enough money for him to feel comfortable that you're not getting in over your head.  Three times the rent is normal here in San Antonio.

  2. No law either way.  Legally, the landlord can set his own standards of what is required to rent his apartment.

Most landlords want to make sure the tenant make at least 3X the monthly rent.
