Regarding wal-mart retail stores coming to India,how tough will a competition frm local grocery/general store

I would have to know a lot more about Indian culture to speak to your first question.  As to your second question, being a megastore, they will sell a much greater variety of goods, at about a mid-range quality, than local general stores.  They drive them out of business here at an alarming rate.  If you have stores that offer high-quality, or very unique goods, those will be less affected.  Walmart and "personal touch" ought never be used in the same sentence--they are generally awful at it--but people will go where they can buy all they need at cheap prices and forego personal touches most of the time.
