Regional Food Specialties in Atlanta, Georgia?

I'm taking a trip to Atlanta and vincinity and wondering what the local specialties are in terms of food. Something that you would say that I have to try that I cannot get elsewhere. For example, Chicago's deep-dish pizza, or New Orleans' beignets, Baltimore Crab Cakes, and San Francisco Clam Chowder in Sourdough bowl, Poutine in Montreal, and Pasty in northern Michigan to name a few examples.

If there's anything in surrounding areas, such as Tennessee in South Carolina, I'm open for suggestions too.

Thanks in advance!

  1. Rexall grill in Duluth for breakfast: good southern gravy n biscuits! They also have a great home-cooked lunch menu. Ran by a family: grandma runs the register, the rest of the family runs the restaurant.

  2. I think what you are asking is if there is anything that comes to mind that you can't get anywhere but Atlanta (or wouldn't want to, that is).  Like how you can get fried Mars bars in the UK and some of the best fish-n-chips, also.  Or how Cincinnati has its famous skyline chili...

Like many others mentioned, soul food always comes to mind.  But in the eight years that I have lived here, Atlanta is the first place I have ever heard of "Chicken and Waffles."  It's just that - friend chicken served next to waffles...and don't be shy if some maple syrup gets in your chicken I am told.  I have never personally had it, but it sounds interesting: something savory and fried paired with something sweet and dessert-like.

Roscoe's is an L.A.-based restaurant that made this dish popular, but Atlanta has been known for it, as well when Gladys Knight opened up a restaurant in the area - wiki.

I think it would also be a shame not to have some amazing peach cobbler if you came here, too.

  3. Georgia is known for Waffle house and Chick fa lay

  4. If you like steak-  there is a great place outside Atlanta that usually makes the BEST STEAK PLACES list.  Its called BONES- and I highly recommend it!!!

Now if you are going to Memphis in Tennesee- The Rendezvous is the place. They say Elvis spent a lot of time there and ate a boatload of RIBS. They are amazing but have the dry rub kind!!!  (what Memphis is known for)

South Carolina- if you mean Charleston-  there are some charming restaurants there!  Here's the best "Magnolia" :

Its pricey but worth it- the Low Country specials are always good!!!

One more tip - if you are in Savannah and LOVE to eat- You will enjoy Lady and Sons- Paula Deen's place.  There is usually a wait but oh man- the food- - -   Don't be on a diet if you go there!!!  (then again you are asking where to eat good nationwide so diets are not in your plan!!!  ENJOY)

  5. Try the barbecue. I like Williamson brothers barbecue and Dusty's on Briarcliff road. My husband likes Ribs and Blues and Fat Matt's Rib Shack.

You should also try Southern home style cooking. I like Mary mac's Tea room. Also an eclectic twist on southern food is always interesting and I love Agnes & Muriel's. They have all the regulars like fried green tomatoes and great fried mac and cheese and a yummy sour cream corn cake.

You should also try the ghetto burger Ann's Snack Bar.

Also there are ton's of really good Latina, Chinese and Korean food here because of the population diversity.
