Regions Morgan Keegan Championships: Roddick defeats Tipsarevic
First seed and American number one, Andy Roddick, made short work of Serbian tennis pro, Janko Tipsarevic, in a straight-sets match, proceeding to the quarterfinals with a 6-1, 7-6(8) victory in one hour and thirty minutes.
Roddick is expected to score his 30th Association of Tennis Professionals [ATP] title at the 2011 Regions Morgan Keegan Championships and Cellular South Cup tournament.
As the top seed, he received a bye in the first round of the Memphis event before facing World number 51, Janko Tipsarevic, in the second round.
Meanwhile, Tipsarevic defeated American qualifier, Ryan Sweeting, 6-0, 7-6(7) to set up a meeting with Roddick.
The match was not an effortless victory for Roddick, although he was successful in winning the first set with a fry. He scored six aces in this set, as opposed to Tipsarevic’s two. In addition to this, he also converted two of three break points successfully
without facing a single one himself. To this end, he finished the set with an impressive 66 percent of the total points.
However, the second set was not such a straightforward affair. Although, Roddick still managed to score eight aces, Tipsarevic picked up his game to fire three. The Serbian also challenged Roddick to one break point, which he successfully converted.
He also saved two out of three of his own break points. Near the end of the set, many fans felt that the match would go into a deciding round. However, Roddick bounced right back in the tie-breaker to take the set 7-6(8). The American managed to win the
set in spite of the fact that his opponent won more points than him.
28-year old Roddick is currently ranked world number 8, and he has been playing on the ATP Tour since 2000. Tipsarevic, meanwhile, is 26 years old and currently ranked world number 51. He joined the professional circuit in 2002, two years after Roddick.
This victory brings their head-to-head record to 2-all. Roddick and Tipsarevic played their first match in the round of 128 at the 2006 Wimbledon Championships. Roddick managed to win the match in four sets, scoring a 6-7(5), 6-4, 7-6(6), 6-2 victory over
his Serbian opponent.
Their next match was in 2008, once again on the grass courts of the Wimbledon Championships. They met in the round of 64, where Tipsarevic took revenge by winning the match 6-7(5), 7-5, 6-4, 7-6(4).
Their most recent meeting was last year at the US Open, where Janko Tipsarevic scored his second victory over Roddick in the round of 64. He won the match 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, 7-6(4).
Andy Roddick will now face Australian number 1, Lleyton Hewitt, who defeated French world number 61, Adrian Mannarino, 6-7(9), 7-5, 6-0 in the second round.
