Registering a car without insurance--California?

Question

with our old car we had we were able to register it back in jan without having insurance, they said we can still register but have to get insurance and provide proof within so many days. well we got into a bad accident with that car and we now have no car, or insurance and we are planning on buying a used car tomorrow from a friend, can we register it without having insurance right off the bat? just asking maybe laws have changed. i can not seem to find my answer on the dmv web site. thank you..im in california

You are kidding, right?  You mash up one car without insurance, and you want to drive another without insurance?  Are you clinically insane?

You may have time to provide proof, but that does not allow you to drive without insurance, and it never did.

From the California DMV:

"The minimum liability insurance required in California for private passenger is:

$15,000 for injury or death of one person

$30,000 for injury or death of more than one person

$5,000 for damage to property

This is the absolute minimum you can get and still drive your car, and most people buy more coverage than this. Your insurer may recommend coverage in the range of 100/300/100."

"Proof of liability insurance must be in the vehicle at all times. If you're pulled over, the officer will ask to see your insurance card, and you'll be cited and fined if you can't produce it. The fines for not carrying proof of insurance can be steep―not less than $500 and possible court costs―and your vehicle could be impounded."
