Question:

Registering child for school?

do they do background checks on parents if they register a child for school or do they just need proof of id? Would they only do a background check should the parent want to go on a field trip or transport other children? my friend said she is having issues because she has a criminal record and she is limited because of her record. I have never heard of any of this but it makes sense doing one should you be driving children to field trips or what not. But to pick your kid up from school would it be an issue?

  1. I have never heard of any school doing a check on parents  that are registering there child in school that is ridicules.

  2. In public schools background checks are only involved for chaperoning field trips or coaching sports. To register a child for school, all they check is proof of residency, proof of the child's age/parents (birth certificate and maybe guardianship papers), and any previous school records for the child.

I would advise her not to volunteer for "class mom" or anything, but registration should be just fine.

  3. No, they do not do background checks on parents registering their children for school.  Or for picking them up from school.  Our school system also does not do background checks on parents who volunteer.  Only for substitutes and teachers.

  4. To register your child they just need proof of ID.  They copy this into the record so they will know who you are when you come to pick up your child.  They do a CORI and SORI check if you want to go on field trips or volunteer in any way in the class where you will have direct contact with the children.  They will not let you do these things if you have any drug charges, child abuse or neglect, any assault, dangerous weapons, possesion of fire arms, etc.  Also if you have ever been convicted of a s*x crime. They can not stop somebody from picking up their own children from school as long as she is not a s*x offender.

  5. Only background checks for field trips or things where you would have a lot of contact with kids (working in classrooms, etc).  In terms of picking up after school, if she has custody, then they would not need a background check.  To take another person's child home, the other parent would send a note to the school saying they give permission for that day (like for a playdate or ride to after school activity).  So she would only be limited from chaperoning field trips.  Unless she is a s*x offender, then usually there are limitations as to how close they can get to the school.

  6. Normally you only need proof of residency to register a child for school.....your driver's license, another photo ID, or at least a utility bill to verify your address, so they know you live in the school district.

However, if you wish to volunteer in the classroom, or be a field trip chaperone, the school will indeed do a background check on you.

  7. my daughters preschool does background checks for anyone volunteering

on the other hand, my older daughters school never has done it, so I guess it depends on the district

they shouldn't  have a problem with you picking up the child from school

  8. If your friend is a registered s*x offender she can be barred from school functions.

Otherwise, no, nobody does a back ground check (for public school, for private school they may do a credit check to make sure you can pay their bills)  They will ask for proof of residency, usually a drivers license and a utility bill or mortgage receipt.

  9. Is she registering her child for public or private schools?  Public school has to accept everyone whereas private schools have the right to be more selective.

  10. they are getting more and more strict about who spends time with school children.  volunteers and substitutes and full time personnel all get fingerprinted.  just registering your child won't cause them to do any kind of background check.  it's just if you spend time with the class that you get checked out.
