Maybe one of the 1s is package with two items as a package wrapped with two twinkies and a single twinkie packed by itself. Therefore, you have 3 twinkies, but 2 items to purchase at the checkstand. So 1 item with 2 twinkies + 1 item with 1 twinkie = 3 twinkies.

This looks like an example of synergy.  Synergy, basically speaking, means that the product is more than the sum of its parts.  When one person does something, they can produce the work of one person.  When two people work together, they can produce not just the work of two people, but maybe even three or four because they worked together.
