Think of fractions like currency. The bottom of the fraction is the currency you have. Say the first fraction is Dollars and the second fraction is Matthew Ps. Before we can add or subtract currency it's helpful to be talking about the same currency.

Ex: In the first problem we have 5 and 15. Let dollars be 5 and matthew ps be 15. Notice the relationship 5*3 = 15. So...Let's rewrite this.

?/(5*3) + 2/15. Now we are dealing only in Matthew P currency. But we don't know what ? is. Note that 3/3 = 1 (The reason I note this will be clear in a second.)

So (4*3)/(5*3) = 4/5 Since we are multiplying by 1 as 2x1 = 2...etc. This is also 12/15.

Therefore 12/15 + 2/15 = 14/15.

This method will help you do Problems 2, 4, and 5 on your list.

The rest follow the same procedure with one small problem the multiple fraction bar. I'm assuming pemdas is being followed and it means 3/15 then take that and divide it by 16. If this is actually 3/(15/16) please post back.

For this it helps to know that dividing by 2 is the same thing as multiplying by a half. Let's break this apart step by step using 3/15/16.

3/15/16 = 3 * (1/15) * (1/16). Or 3/(15*16). Likewise this reduces to 1/(5*16) Because 3/15 = 1/5.

Repeating with 2/1/4 is 2/4 = 1/2. So 1/2 + 1/(5*16) Which makes it like the previous problems.
