My child does this head butting thing that he goes up and just head butts anything and everything. He use to do it really soft and not very often but now he does it when he is getting tired and he does it really hard to the point where he is hurting us and him self. I don't know what to do, I was thinking about taking him to the doctor but I don't know what good it would do?

  1. normal

  2. I used to do this when it's a kid, and the way my mom stopped it might be a bit mean but it worked. I'd hit hard enough to brake her nose!

So one day when she saw me rearing back she put her knuckle in my path. I smacked my head. had some tears, but after a few times it hurt me enough i stopped doing it. I would rear back and try, she' put her fist up, i'd see it and stop.

She wouldn't retaliate or any thing, just put something in my path so i would learn not to.

  3. You could have a free developmental evaluation by early childhood intervention.  You don't need a referral, and if your son has issues, could qualify for free therapy.  What is a possibility is occupational therapy for sensory issues.  Your son has a low awareness of his head in space (hypoproprioception).  It is common.  If he were doing it out of a tantrum, like frustration from lack of communication then that would be typical.  Since he is just headbutting just to do it, it is sensory seeking and not for attention.  He may not qualify, and even if he were to qualify, he would probably outgrow it without therapy.  My oldest outgrew this at age 3.  My middle we got the therapy, so he doesn't do it.  My youngest also gets the therapy.  He still isn't too aware and walks into tables, walls, and drawers and doors.

  4. if you think you need to talk to a doc about this then do it this is you r child we are talking about here i went through this with my lil one but it did not get that bad i would go a head and call a doc and see what they think just to be on the safe side and to see if there is another way that you can get through to him that this is not a good thing to do and that it could really hurt him bad good luck

  5. 1.  I bet you that you have a son.

    2.  This is perfectly normal.  More boys than girls do this as well as hitting themselves in the head.

    3.  Then you are asking yourself, why?  Well, there could be a number of reasons.  Your son is trying to get attention, doesn't know what to do with these new feelings and sensations at this age, he is teething or in pain and wants to divert the pain, or is just seeing what happens and how it feels to butt his head.

If you take him to the doc and there isn't any other symptoms, you will be wasting $20.
