1989 nova (old school)

am putting a head gasket on my 1200 nova does anyone know the pressure to torque the head back down to, this is also a head off a different nova how will i know where to set the cam wheel for the timming, i think as long as i set the arrow to the top i should be ok , but if any knows for sure let me know thanks

  1. you need the engine to be at top dead center to set the timing.

    If it is at TDC, then you do want the timing marks at the top.

The torque settings for your engine are as follows :- starting from the middle and workingn to the ends, tighten to 25 newton metres, then turn the bolts a further 60 degrees, do this three times. Do NOT reuse the old bolts, always fit new, the bolts are designed to stretch as they are tightened and are not reusable - this is very important.

    The timing marks are on the bottom pulley and camshaft sprocket, when you have fitted the head turn the engine by hand to be sure the valves are not hitting the pistons.

    One more thing, the hydraulic lifters will need to be bled down or the valves will not seat properly. I have found putting a piece of wood either side of the lifter and squeezing them in vice does the job.
