There are 2 guns that i have always wanted for praire dog and coyote hunting. They are the 22-250. and the 204. Most people tell me that the 204. has to light of a bullet and the wind will affect it to much at long ranges. The ballistics are pretty impresive, fast, flat and heavy hitting. The 22-250. is a very impresive cartridge as well, fast and very flat and will do good at long range. Most people have shot the 22-250 and i have never heard anything bad about it but what about the 204. I dont want a 223. i know they are good but i want the 22-250. or the 204.

  1. .22-250 by all means.Especially if your not going to reload, there are several more factory choices to pick from.

  2. The 22-250 is your best choice because it is more stable at longer ranges, and has a longer barrel life expectancy than the 204.* 22-250 is hard to beat.* I have one in a Remington Model 700 with bull barrel, with a Redfield Model 3200 20 Power Target Scope mounted on it. I can see them Blink.*

  3. I don't have any experience with the .204 Ruger, but I do have LOTS of experience with the .22-250 Rem., and I think its the best varmint/target round that I've shot.  From the ballistic charts that I've seen on the .204, I'm sure its a good caliber, but don't really see any advantage of using it over the more common .22-250, plus if you reload there is better bullet selection in the .224 caliber as compare to the .204, just my 2 cents, good luck and I'm sure you'll be happy with either,  also I think skipping the .223 is a good decision if you plan to hunt coyotes, the .223 doesn't even compare to either the .204 or .22-250.

  4. I say.....

Get both! You only live once. Sounds like a good excuse to go the the gun shop.

Send me which ever one you don't like.

  5. I shot a 204 and 17 a bunch up north on wood chucks and coyotes and they worked well. I had good cover, low wind or protected wind and shots less than 100 yards most places I hunted. Michigan is denser for population so long rounds were out... you need something that peters out before it gets to the farm down the road or dies in the brush.

In OK the wind is constant... ans shots are longer with less cover.

Around here we see a lot of 243's, 25-06, 22-250 .... all flat shooters fast enough to cut the wind and carry energy out at a distance.

Upside to the 22-250. It will kill deer sized game so I may be a bit more useful than a .204 Ruger. If you handload you get some options too.

Have fun! The other guy says buy both...+!1 !

  6. the best one would be a .243 but out of those 2 a .22-250
