  1. I am no expert but it could have lice. No, it isn't normal for feathers to fall off in numbers unless it is molting. It does that once a year, I believe usually in the spring. I do have a parrot .  I have never gotten her to completely stop biting even though she is tame. Is your cockatiel spoon fed?

That makes a difference in how well you can tame a bird.

It takes lots of patience and TLC to train and tame them. How to check for lice is to inspect the bird. Lice stick to feathers just like in the hair. It would cause itching so that could be a clue to all that scratching, but may not be the reason. It may just be dryness.

  2. 1) There are three major categories of biting:

Teething.  OK, it's not really teething, but young birds may not have great beak control and certainly haven't learned how much pressure is acceptable.

Fear.  A panicked bird is likely to bite.  About all you can do is avoid terrifying the bird - they really don't know what they're doing if they're that scared.  They can likewise lose control if they get overly excited.  Don't pick the bird up when it's that excited.  Let it calm down a bit, first.

Dominance, territory, or other types of manipulation.  If parrots can get something they want by biting you, they will bite you.  Conversely, if biting you does no good, they won't.  Parrots usually enjoy yelling, so yelling at them only makes them bite you more often.  This is the reason you are advised to "not react".  Though "not react" isn't really right - you want to make it clear that you don't approve, but without being dramatic about it (parrots like drama).  A firm "No." is fine; yelling is not.  If the bird wants you to stop doing something, consider continuing it a bit longer; if it bites you because it wants something from you, it shouldn't get it.  The object is not to be mean to the bird, but to avoid teaching it that biting works.

In general, your goal is to avoid having the bird bite you in the first place. Not picking it up when it's excited, putting it down if it seems likely to bite, or distracting it are all better than being bitten and trying to alter its behavior after the fact.

2/3) Some degree of scratching is normal, as is some degree of feather loss.  Both go up quite a bit when a bird molts.  Without seeing how much scratching or how many feathers and what type, it's impossible to tell if this is normal or excessive.  I can only suggest consulting a local parrot expert or avian vet (non-avian vets won't do any good).

  3. i would contact a vet

  4. 1. leather gloves lol just takes time for it to get used to u enogh for it to allow u to handle it.

    2. lice is common on birds.

    3. it's just molting don't wry bout it.

  5. no fast way to stop biting. the bird doesn't trust you or is upset over something.

birds do not get lice. they get mites and the can get into the air sacs and cause bad infections. they will have to get the mites treated.

feathers falling off constantly is a bad sign of a serious health problem. do you have basic knowledge of your birds breed and understand what molting is. these things are all in books and if any of the 3 are going on it does require a vet's care.

behavioral assistance can even be given by a vet for the bites.

i hope you write down your questions and let the avian vet who knows birds well gives you some basic materials and information on birds for beginners. i have a hunch you are new at this.

go to the library and check out lots of books on your breed of bird this way you can get to know more about him.

    Best wishes! ~♥~
