  1. If you have a 64 bit cpu then there is no disadvantage with the 64 bit version.  It will run any program.

  2. You also have to get different sets of drivers for the 64-bit OS., which sometimes can be a little challenging. Nowadays though, companies are making drivers for both.

Another plus of 64 bit OS is that you can utilize more RAM than the 32 bit OS

  3. Yes. Any properly coded 32-bit program can be run just fine on 64-bit Windows.

  4. I strongly suggest not to buy a 64-bit Vista. You will have so many problems because not everyone is making 64-drivers and software. In many cases major companies try to make 64-bit versions but they don't maintain them as good as the usual 32-bit ones.

Then it is easy to mess up the 32-bit with 64-bit stuff. Not that you mess up, but other software companies do. They don't check if your Vista 32 or 64-bit and assume it is 32 and they mess up directories, registry and such. Later you end up reinstalling the OS, and this time it is your responsibility to find all the matching and working 64-bit drivers. Believe me this part isn't fun. You won't be able to find exact versions that came with your laptop. some companies update their drivers and the other un-updated drivers won't install because the required version is not there.
