imagine there are lines in between these spaces. this algorithm works but why and how ??

just a try:

take the first and 2nd digits of 36 and 48 separately then add them

6+ 8 = 14

3 + 4 = 7

then add the first digit of 14 which is 1 to 7 it becomes 8.. so it becomes 84.

That is how you do addition!

You add the the numbers in the 1's column, the 6 and the 8, which is 14.

You put the 4 under the line and carry the 1 to the ten's place above the 3. then you add the 1 and the 3 and the 4 together to get 8. The 8 to the left of the 4 is 84.

You're just writing the numbers below, but adding them up the same. You're not doing anything very different.

That should be because

36 + 48 = (30 + 6) + (40 + 8)

            = (30 + 40) + (6 + 8)

            = 70 + 14

            = 84

The number 7 in the problem above actually represents the value 70 in the addition.
