  1. well the person aove me practically named all the historical sites, but the only thing i've gotta ad is you gotta go to all the shopping centres, like Diamond Plaza, it's got kinda normal/slightly expensively priced clothes, shoes and what not. Zen plaza, and the street its on has a lot of stores and very nice restaurants. The place the person suggested ben thanh, is like a market, most of the things are cheap, but definitely not as good quality as stuff in shopping centres. The only way you can be sure the stuff is good is check the material and quality stitching etc. Also if you are a foreigner, they will automatically charge you a lot more. If you are a vietnamese living outside tof vietnam they will charge you more, just not as much as they would charge the foreigner. So basically shirts would usually cost 5-10 US dollars. Higher quality 15 US dollars. SHoes like converses and what not 20-30. anyway that's just an outline, always bargain at the markets. Sometimes in shopping plazas that stock fake polo ralph lauren, lacoste and burberry you will be able to bargain. Remember if they dont go down on the price, walk away. They should call you back. If not, i'm sure just down the road, there will be another seller with the exact same stuff. Go around, compare prices. and have good fun.

btw make sure you keep your money safe, people might steal, there are also con artists who pretend to be poor. But there are some people who are actually poor and disabled, you can give them money if you want, but make sure not too many beggars are around or they will follow u till your hotel! Also many little kids will come up to you selling maps, dvds, newspapers, chewing gum, water bottles etc.

be careful with the gum and water they sell, it may have been refilled with water you're not used to and may make you sick, so always check the bottle has not been open yet, and the gum is not overdue, if you're buying the stuff.

also be careful of taxi drivers, only trust my linh taxis or saigon tourist taxis. other taxis may honk their horn, and the price will dramatically go up.

restaurants i'd recommend are mon hue, pho 24, the famous pho 2000 (bill clinton went there), umm Sen.

The way i'm describing Vietnam, sounds like there are many tricky people, but its a wonderful palce, with a beautiful atmosphere, it's just that there are some people who are poor and need to stoop to the level of tricking to make a living.

anyway i've been ranting on for too long. btw purchase lonleyplanet's book on vietnam, best book to get you around. have fun.
