  1. I wouldn't mix juice in with his formula. Juice + milk = tummy ache.

5 months old is a little young to introduce juice, I'd wait until he was atleast 6 months old, but you can start with just 1oz of juice with 1oz of water, then at 7 months go to 2oz of juice with 2oz of water.  1x a day.

My doctor advised me never give more then 4oz of juice at a time, they will get filled up on juice instead of formula/food.

Have you introduced a sippy cup? He might take well to the sippy cup with juice in it.

  2. a few time a day in between feedings and you DO NOT mix it with formula! you can dilute it with water is all.

  3. 2 oz juice with 2 oz water. that's all he needs right now. when he is around 8-10 months you can up it to 4 oz but that's around the time they cut back on formula and increase solids. if you notice your baby's bowel movements dramatically increase with the juice and water than you should probably just give it every other day.

  4. Do you put rice in his milk/formula?  That constipates.

Cut back on the rice if you do use it.  Otherwise, water down the formula a tiny bit more.

The idea is that you aren't giving any extra water at all.  That fills up the baby, so he won't want the nutritious formula.

I would think that constipation is normal when making another major change in his diet.

  5. A couple of ounces should be fine if he really needs it.   But I'd probably give it separately, rather than mixed with his formula.

  6. Don't give him juice! It rots developing teeth and provides empty calories (sugar with minimal nutrients).

How do you know he is constipated? Many babies don't p**p every day. Some only do once a week and it's completely normal. It's best for your son to only have formula and for his digestive system to regulate itself without assistance. If you are really concerned that your son is constipated, see your doctor.
