  1. Actually it is better to place the rear speakers on the side of rather than behind you.

  2. Have you ever thought about using the 5.1 set-up until you get the space to hook up a 7.1 set-up.   Just leave the Back Surround[s] out you will still get the sound field from the Side Surrounds, your receiver will know the difference, so it will channel the sound to the to sides, and when you get the space or maybe use something to simulate a rear wall to install your back surrounds, your receiver will detect that they are connected and the will channel your back surround to it's locations, but in the mean time if this is being confusing for you, just go with the 5.1 set up until you can configure a way to use your 7.1 set-up.  And remember, if you are using a THX Receiver you might want to keep your Back Surrounds close together to achieve the ASA (Advanced Speaker Array) that THX set-ups requires.  (only if you have a THX Receiver.

  3. The purpose of surround sound is to be "surrounded" or enveloped in the sound.  For the best effect, you should have rear speakers. If there is no floor space, try mounting the speakers on the rear walls on both sides of the room.

  4. One in each corner, and 2 in front of the t.v.
