I am assuming that the x - 4 is not in a parentheses. This is important because you need to know whether you are distributing/multiplying (x - 4)(2 + x) or simply - 4 (2 + x). Since only the (2 + x) is within a parentheses the problem should be done like this ...

I'm not sure how this equation should have read. As written above it can't be solved. The left side of the equation must equal the right side. Because you end up with a - 3x on both sides  ... (x - 4x) on the right = -3x .. the - 3x's cancel leaving 7 = -8 . Something's wrong. Sorry, good luck. Maybe someone else can find the mistake.
