We had ours serviced last year and they added Freon. Is it just the Texas sun that keeps the house so darn hot? What can I do?

Thanks!

  1. Is the attic insulated?

If it is, maybe you need to add some ventilation and/or an attic fan.

Add shades over windows exposed to the Sun, or plant trees to shade those windows in summer.

That's what we do here for the California Sun, which shines just as hot as it does in Texas.

  2. there are a lot of things you can do to help your AC unit.  First all ways make sure you have the shades pulled on the sunny side of the house as sun through glass windows adds greatly to the heat inside your house.  Make sure you have enough insulation in your walls and ceilings as this will help keep the cool air inside instead of out.  Make sure your doors and windows seal properly. Once you get it cool, keep it cool by leaving the unit on instead of turning off and on.  It is a lot easier to maintain a temp then it is to let it get hot and try to cool it down,(inside surfaces hold heat )  and last but not all means least, make sure that your unit is sized right to cool a house your size.  If it is undersized and it get s extremely hot outside, nothing it will do will keep your house cool.  Hope that helps

  3. make sure your condensing unit is clean [the one on the out side] turn off spray 409 wash from inside out with hose also change your air filter monthly and if you can get to your evaporator coil clean it like outside coils of course this all should have been done before freon added

  4. HVAC Tech.: In Texas I would recommend a yearly check-up. We clean coils, check electrical connections, check insulation on refrigerant lines and duct work. We try to maintain the state of cleanliness the unit had when new.Home owners are not qualified to do these things, most can't even remember to change the air filter once a month even though that would save them more money than any other single thing they could. I see units all the time that instead of running 15 to 20 years die off in warranty from bad house keeping. Some times there is a "MICRO" leak and refrigerant has to be put back. You may have such a leak.
