A&P Mechanic????

Question

I'm thinking about taking schooling to become an A&P Mechanic (someone who works on aircraft). My question is if anyone knows anything about this career, and if its any good, how much one makes, and what kind of job availability there is. The more info you give the better.

There is a huge shortage right now. It is very important that you will enjoy this type of job. It is easy to get the certificate but the learning is endless as the regulations are always changing and technology is finally making a difference in aviation.

Pay is based on skill and experience. You will need to be patient while you learn, the pay is good eventually after about 5  years experience.

It all depends on what you are looking for.  It use to be an excellent career if you worked for a large airline.  Now, not so much.

Salaries vary widely.   I made $75K last year.  I have been with the same airline for 20+ years and am an inspector.  Starting out or general aviation will be about $12 and hour.

Personally, I never recommend it to women unless they are SURE they want to be an aircraft mechanic, and not just looking for an above average salary.

If you do decide to study aviation, be sure to contact WIA (women in aviation) as they have scholarships available.

An A + P Mechanic is a great job. The pay is not that great for the first few years then it becomes better but then it starts to drop off again. Not that you lose you salary but you top off fairly quickly, after five years at an airline. And unfortunately the salary does not keep up with inflation. It is not bad though. You have to give holidays, weekends, nights and clean hands. It can be stressful, fast paced, and sometimes overwhelming. You have to be on top of the regulations and rules as they apply to you and your work. But in return you get to work on planes, never go to the same job twice. Everyday something new will happen and you will never stop learning. It never gets boring and you will never know what to expect. I worked as an Technician for 15 years and I loved it. I never got enough of it. But my family got too big and the industry is just too unstable so I finally left. But I miss it very much and might go back part time just to get a small taste. There are many places you can go to school. Some vocational and then don't forget to look at your local Jr. colleges and city colleges. They offer these classes at a fraction of the price. Good Luck. By the way most of the younger Techs. could care less if your a male or female. As long as you are dependable, hard working and willing to get dirty.
