A couple deviantart questions?

I just created my deviantart account, and I have a few questions:

1. How do you add emoticons into your comments?

2. Is it bad or good if someone watches you?

3. What are the purpose of journals? Are they just places where you can write whatever you want, and everybody can see?

4. I want to make a tutorial eventually, (not anytime soon), but how do you make one? Do you need to use some special program, or can it just be a long document in photoshop/paint/word/etc?

1. beside the place where you add your comment, there is usually the 'emoticon legend' (a clickable word you will have to click to open the legend)

2. It's a good thing. It means someone wants to be notified whenever you submit a deviation or update your journal, someone likes your stuff. Unless that creeps you out that someone knows everything you do there (which is irrational since you joined the site to begin with), it is good.

3. journals keep you in touch with the deviantart community. You can rant there, and people can choose to read or not. Its like a blog that people can comment on, and share their own opinions. you can ask questions or just tell about something that happened, anything really. provided it abides by deviantart rules, of course.

4. It can be made in paint or photoshop, whichever you wish. You can't upload word documents onto deviantart however, so if you want it to be a text only tutorial, you will have to copy the text from whichever word program used into the text area provided by deviantart on the submission form.

First one; I actually do not know.

Second; It's good! :D It means someone likes your art and is going to see when you post a new journal, new picture etc. c:

Third; It's sort of like an update sort of thing. Like where you're gonna be for the week and such.

Forth; It can be a document and paint/photoshop. Anything but not word.

for emoticons you need to place the symbol/word sequence for the emoticon.  You can find a list of all of the emoticons here http://comments.deviantart.com/emoticons On the right side is the emoticon and on the left is what you need to enter to have that emoticon displayed (this includes the : : on either side of the word)
