Question:

A question about betting etiquette...?

I bet a guy at my work $1000 that I could lose 31 pounds in 31 days. Well, I made it. I actually lost 36.5 pounds.

So, here's my question, would you have brought the money on the day of the weigh-in? What length of time do you think would be acceptable to wait for my $1000? It's been over a week so far with him saying, "I just have to go to the bank." Is something wrong here?

  1. I would be suprised if he pays....

  2. Some people value their money more than their dignity.  The other person has low morals and will probably not pay you off.

Good for you to have lost the weight, keep it off.

  3. Okay, CNN might be overkill.

Keep on the guy.  If it's just a "go to the bank" issue, and not a "as soon as I get the cash" issue, he should swing by the bank on lunch, get the cash, and meet you at the bar after work to pay off the bet.  (You buy the drinks, though, lots of them .... After all, the dude just lost $1000!)

  4. If this was a serious enough bet that you actually had a weigh in on the 31st day, you both should have shown up with $1,000 in hand.  Welching on a bet is one of those things no man should ever do.  I am a gambler by nature and I have made some pretty silly prop bets in my time, but I have always paid up.  This guy needs a smack in the head, it's time for him to pay up already.

  5. Stay on him. tell personnel, tell the world. In fact, go to your local media station.Get it on CNN news.

  6. Did you bring a thousand dollars to the weigh in if you lost?  Most work bets that I've had are settled the day after the event.  If he keeps putting you off, and it's something small like going to the bank, tell him that you'll go with him at lunch, after work, or right now.  If you DID have the money on hand at the weigh in point it out.  But be firm, and tell him that you DO in fact expect him to pay his debt.  If it's a big deal (like he doesn't have it) tell him you can wait until next payday.  But don't waffle too much, this guy made a bet and now needs to pay up.  That's just part of being a man.

  7. Proper etiquette is to have a third party who is not involved in the bet collect the money up front (like before the 31 days) and hold it until a winner is decided. If you don't do that you can never know if the other person is actually serious.
