A question about cutlery?

I was taught by my grandmother, that when you finish your dinner, you place your fork upside down (prongs facing down), and place your knife next to it facing inwards.

My husband leaves his fork facing up, and his knife facing out ~ it bugs me slightly (but only because I'v always done it the other way)

Is there a "correct" way????

  1. The fork should face upwards and the knife should face inwards.  OMG, I really need to get a life...

  2. Melissa, I would leave my knife and fork the way your Grandma taught you it's just how I think it should be. Who's to say how to leave your knife and fork when you are done eating.. Why do I need someone to tell me how to place my knife and fork when I'm done eating? People put too much emphasis on every little thing. Leave me alone when I'm eating. Right and Wrong way to place your knife and fork?PLEASE.....bd

  3. Yes, and neither of you is correct.

The fork and knife are left on the plate. They should not be hanging over the edge. Both of them should be placed together, straight across the middle of the plate.

  4. there are correct ways ....

BUT ... in the greater picture of things ... DOES IT REALLY MATTER ?

I guess if that is something that bugs you ( even slightly ) you must have a fairly nice life ( please note not having a go at you ) with few big worries.

More importantly .. does he thank you for the meal you just made him ?

    :)

  5. Your grandmother taught you right, but not many people in the US are taught it. I was corrected at a restaurant in England. When you place your cutlery like that it lets the wait staff know you're finished eating and they can take your plate away. Etiquette reigns over there.
