So, in a week I'm flying from IL to NY with United Airlines and I have a question. Can I take a few medium-sized cardboard boxes with me as checked luggage?? Or can you only take suitcases??

  1. Cardboard boxes are just fine. Just make sure to tape them well!

Best wishes & have a great flight!

  2. if they dont fit in ur suitcase then you will have to probably pay extra ....

  3. call them and make sure you get the int'l dept, if you select domestic you'll be transfered to india. the usa agents get your answers fast

  4. Yes you may check boxes vs bags the follow fees would apply:

It used to be 2 free bags but that has changed. If travel is before Aug 18th you will still get the 1st bag/box free but the second is now $25 as long as it meets the weight/size requirements. After Aug 18th the 1st bag will be $15

The dimensions must not be more that a total of 62 inches (W+H+L) and no more than 50 lbs.

    3rd bag $100  62in/50lb

Oversized (more than 62 in)  $100

Overweight (more than 50 lb)  $100

They may or may not want to look inside your boxes....so it might be best to bring your tape along with you and tape them up there.  I know if you are taking gifts the TSA says not to wrap them I would think the same applies to regular boxes.
